Incoming members of the 2025 committee were each asked to prepare a short introductory note for the Association’s 2024 AGM. My contribution was “Mindful Practicality”. This attempt at brevity was nixed and my contribution was expanded to: “The bedrock of a sustainable enterprise is a mindful and practical approach to fulfilling regulatory expectations.”

And it’s a wrap! We held the last event of the year, AIWM Regulatory & Compliance Update workshop, together with UBS Singapore last Wednesday, which saw over 70 members come by for a morning of learning the best practices of cyber resiliency, managing cybersecurity risks. Facilitated by Ingenia Consultants, over 20 professionals from our Ordinary member firms, holding the operations and/or compliance forts, attended the FIRST AIWM Regulatory Masterclass on 4 Dec 2024.

No material regulatory updates for external asset managers (“EAMs”) were issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (“MAS”) in November 2024. Hopefully, this will allow us to enjoy the festive season. At the same time, financial institutions may finalise the implementation of previous updates and prepare for the filings due early next year.

MAS reminder – Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) audits

On 21 October 2024, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) issued a circular to remind Financial Institutions (FIs) about the importance of maintaining an audit function to provide an independent and regular assessment of the firm’s AML/CFT policies, procedures and controls.

On 30 October 2024, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (“MAS”) published a flurry of papers on anti-money laundering (“AML”) and countering the financing of terrorism (“CFT”), including the National Anti-Money Laundering Strategy, the Proliferation Financing (PF) National Risk Assessment and Counter-PF Strategy, a Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Risk Assessment of Legal Persons, and a Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Risk Assessment of Legal Arrangements. The most notable information paper is, however, on “AML/CFT Supervisory Expectations from Recent Inspections”.
