AIAM Q1 2017 Newsletter

We hope you’ve had a great start to 2017! This year, we will be sharing the latest updates with timely quarterly newsletters.

Times are changing. As EAMs, there are so many topics to face, like compliance, fintech, cross-border, impact investing and more. When industry peers come together, we have a bigger voice so potential clients and senior private bankers know that our business is a viable one.

To do so, we urge everyone to look out for three things this year:

  1. Quarterly networking events to exchange industry info
  2. Regulatory updates over breakfasts and luncheons
  3. Thought leadership discussions that bring key insights

For starters, it will be great to follow AIAM’s LinkedIn page (LINK) for open discussions and sharing.

See you soon!

Best regards
The Committee Members

HIGHLIGHTS FROM Q4 2016

September 2016: Annual General Meeting

In Anthonia’s own words, “every year, we challenge ourselves to excel. In that spirit of continuous improvement, we take on new ideas to do things differently and implement them. It is my privilege to have been President since inception, but now it is time for change in both the committee structure and the way we do things.”

Under Steve’s new stewardship, AIAM has a refreshed vision to take Singapore’s independent community to the next level. Read more at Hubbis (LINK).

October 2016: Understanding the Source of Alpha

AIAM and Dimensional Fund Advisors co-hosted a tea session where Nobel Laureate Professor Robert Merton offered his unique insights on the major trends in asset management and the sources of alpha: traditional alpha (market information inefficiency which is a zero sum game and hard to predict who will have it in the future), financial services alpha (market frictions and institutional rigidities) and dimensional alpha (other systematic risks, in addition to market-portfoliobeta).

Understanding each of these sources allows for better performance evaluation, assessment of potential future performance and asset allocation among alpha-generating investments within the total portfolio. The existence of dimensional alphas relative to the passive market benchmark is entirely consistent with perfect and efficient market conditions, which investors are willing to pay a risk premium to avoid.

These dimensions of risk and return account for the majority of dispersion in security prices and traditional “active alpha manager” performance. Alpha is expected to be a zero sum game, but some securities have higher returns than others, and these dimensions (size, price and profitability) explain such dispersions in returns. As financial advisers, we can use these dimensions to measure manager performance and build portfolios with more explanatory power.

December 2016: Year End Party

One of the biggest event extravaganzas on the AIAM calendar, members came together to celebrate a fruitful year as EAMs continue to grow from strength to strength. Once again, thank you to our sponsors, Global Precious Metals and Pictet Asset Services for putting up an amazing night.

Photos and videos will be up on the new website, stay tuned.

December 2016: MAS Compliance Updates

AIAM members sat down over lunch to gather new updates from a recently concluded dialogue session with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Presented by Anthonia Hui, MAS would be issuing guidance to SG FIs. Once released, MAS will also notify a special carve-out in Singapore CRS regulations for EAMs. On KYC and AML checks, MAS will establish which FIs were responsible for these checks on end investors, as well as beneficial owners of accounts. Michael Velten, Partner at Deloitte also presented a practical approach to CRS and an overview of the Indonesian Tax Amnesty to members.
